Idiots. They are in everyone’s office aren’t they? Always making your life difficult by being rude, arrogant or just bad tempered. Our lives would be fine if we didn’t have to work with them… wouldn’t they? But we are stuck with them. So what is the best way to deal with them?

Side tracking slightly….. I came across a guest in the hotel I am working with a few days ago. When I introduced myself to him and his wife, he wasn’t very polite to me, almost rude in fact. He didn’t seem to want to talk to me at all, but why should he? He is on holiday, probably wanted to spend some time alone with his wife, and that’s fine.

Two days later he came to the Spa for a treatment. One of the Spa therapists introduced me to him saying that he was interested in acupuncture. He came across to me as a completely differently person this time, smiling, polite and asking me if there was anything at all I could do to help him relieve a terrible, constant pain in his shoulder that he had been experiencing for more than 3 weeks.

Ahhh!! Now I understood! This guy wasn’t being rude at all on our first meeting. He was in incredible pain! No wonder he came across as miserable when we first spoke.

And this got me thinking. Anyone we meet who comes across as being irritable, angry, moody, rude or patronising…. aren’t they in pain too, either physically or emotionally?

So just think of that when you next come across an “idiot” in the office or anywhere in fact. You have absolutely no idea what that person is going through in their personal life and therefore you are in no position to judge if they are an idiot or not. In fact, that “idiot” is exactly the same as that “idiot” that you and I become when we are in pain; moody, grumpy and irritable.

When you learn to accept that others suffer, in the same way that you and I do when we are in pain, you will become more accepting of them. Learn to let negative feelings towards others go. Hold on to it and you are the one that suffers. Accept them for the way they are and rather than be negative to them, with each interaction, just try and lighten up their day a little, in any way you can. After all, that’s what we all need when we are in pain …isn’t it?
